    How I Met Your Mother and why I needed a bit more HEA/TV Do-Over Blog Hop

    It’s my stop on the TV Do-Over Blog Hop and my TV show of choice is How I Met Your Mother.

    If you haven’t watched the final episode of How I Met Your Mother – SPOILER ALERT – okay, you were warned.

    Do you know what HEA is? It’s happily ever after. I’m a huge fan of HEA in movies, TV and books and I was a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother too, just not a great fan of their lack of HEA. And I know what you’re thinking “I just watched that scene and it looked like a HEA to me.” But was it? I don’t think so.

    I started watching How I Met our Mother when it first started airing. Australian TV programmers do a funny thing where they run a show in prime time but even if it’s rating well they sometimes move the time slot about – sometimes they do it a whole lot – and that happened with this show. That meant I had to work to find it. I had to check my TV guide and remember when it was on because it wasn’t consistent and in the start I didn’t have a DVR. It would come for a while and then vanish and then start running again at 11pm one week and 9.30pm the next. What I’m telling you is this – I was committed to the show.

    I was loyal because when the show started I was in my mid 30’s and I couldn’t hang out in bars with my friends anymore laughing and eating burgers and I really wanted to (I mean REALLY). I wanted Lily to be my friend and I wanted my husband and I to be the ‘couple friends’ she and Marshall sought to find through many seasons but never quite did. They were a great couple and I wanted both of them happy. I had friends like that, friends who struggled to find their place, stay together and have kids. They were my people. Heck we were probably them to an extent.

    I wanted to be involved in the minutia of my friends’ lives the way the characters in the show were. The truth is, I was home with a small child and I had a husband who travelled a whole lot for work and I was more than a bit lonely and didn’t feel I belonged in the suburbs. When Lily and Marshall moved to the suburbs and couldn’t cut it, I could relate. I missed the days when my friends all lived in apartments nearby each other and met for breakfast and shopping or a post-mortem of the night before. I missed that ability to get together on a whim.

    I also wanted a happily ever after for Ted. Yes he was annoyingly earnest, and he didn’t always have great taste in women, but I really liked that he kept going, kept looking, kept searching and to me that was romantic. I never especially wanted him to end up with Robyn because, even though I liked her character, she never struck me as a team player and to me it seemed Ted wanted desperately to be part of a team.

    As for Barney, I “wait for it” loved that character. I loved that he was fun and completely not realistic. I loved that despite working in an office, in a bank, in a soulless environment he didn’t change. He worked the system. And no, you wouldn’t want to date him, but hell yes, I’d love to have him as a friend. He was hilarious.

    He and Robyn together…that kind of worked for me as well. I wanted them to be happy together. I always want that for people. Especially after spending the whole final season, it seemed, getting them down the aisle I wanted a HEA for them. And I thought what made that couple work was that they were honest with each other in a this-is-who-I-am kind of a way.

    So near the end it looked like finally Ted was going to get his happily ever after with ‘the mother”, Barney and Robin were married and yay Lily and Marshall would finally have couple friends. The gang evolves but stays together. Why not leave it there? That’s how I would have ended the show.

    It’s not that the mother got killed off that annoyed me, though I must say as a viewer it felt sudden, for us he’d spent 8 years looking and only had her for a month. (Plus it was a comedy show and I didn’t need to be by anyone’s hospital bed thank you very much!)

    Still, what annoyed me was that Ted got back to Robyn.

    Robyn who had married his friend and dumped him, Robyn who he’d chased for all those years, Robyn who had let Lily, her best friend, drift out of her life because it was easier than hanging in there. That was not a satisfying ending to me. It felt like the wrong girl got the guy.

    And because of that, because of all that history, because in the words of Maya Angelou “when people show you who they are, believe them” well I wasn’t convinced it would ever work for Ted and Robyn and so it didn’t feel HEA for me.

    So I still love that show, I just probably won’t watch that final episode again.

    That’s what I would do differently – I’d give that show a real happily ever after ending because that’s why we watch TV to escape to a world where the right couple gets together and still gets to hang out with their friends whenever they like – even if they have kids, get old and life knocks them about a little.

    I completely agree. A friend of mine said it disturbed him that the finale basically turned the mother into a place holder, seat warmer, for Robyn. I could not agree more. They did a wonderful job casting and writing for the mother and then they betrayed her. Maybe if we had had more of the mother and ted it would have felt less abrupt and made more sense. At least Robyn got stuck in that awful wig.

    That’s how I felt. Robyn was worthy of the wig, you’re right. I didn’t dislike Robyn as a character. I like that she was upfront and unapologetic about who she was and what she wanted – her career, no kids, travel – but I didn’t want her for Ted. Lots of people wanted him to end up with Victoria…that would have been better because so much of love is luck and timing but Robyn had plenty of chances…like 8 years worth…

    I was so annoyed that the entire last season was spent on Barney and Robyn’s wedding only for them to break up within 5 minutes. It also seemed like a cop-out to me. The writers wanted Ted and Robyn together but we knew she couldn’t be “the mother” because the kids called her “Aunt” Robyn. So let’s find the “mother” but kill her off so that Ted can still end up with Robyn. UGH. What a waste.

    Who didn’t want the mother to be Robyn? From the first episode, which I watched, I wanted it to be her and when it was clear after that first season that we weren’t going to find out until the show ended, I stopped watching. I lack patience. I did periodically watch an episode here and there, and did watch the series ending. Even though I was not a dedicated fan, I was so annoyed that there was this huge build up that lasted YEARS, only for the girl to barely be around and then to end up having Robyn with him. Argh. They could have saved a lot of time just telling me that at the beginning like I wanted.

    I was so let down from the finale. Ted and the mother were together long enough to have kids before she was killed off the show. I hated that they did that to her and had him go back to Robin. I loved Robin and all, but not for Ted. Not even for Barney. She needed someone outside of their circle. We never even got to see little Marvin grow up. The finale was so rushed and just so aggravating. They could have spent the whole season focused on the mother instead.

    Musical Monday – let’s talk ear-worm songs

    Now on to earworm. as you are no doubt aware, earworm songs are those pesky songs you get in your head that you can’t quite seem to shake. You wake up to them, go to sleep to them and find yourself humming them on the train, in the supermarket and in the shower. The annoying thing about an earworm song is you probably don’t even love the song, sometimes they are even songs you hate.

    I played a song in the car back from our road trip two weeks ago and it has been in my head EVER SINCE (yes that is me screaming with frustration). What’s worse is my lovely husband who is currently renovating my kitchen (which is fantastic for life but not so much for writing) is whistling the song while he drills, saws, hammers his way through the day. Drilling and that song do nothing for my creativity.

    Over the years I’ve had some pretty annoying ear worm songs. I’m going to share a couple with you now – you can thank me later – and I would love it if you would share yours with me.

    First off we have Lady GaGa with Alejandro. I do not like this song. I do not like it in the car, I do not like it at a spa, I do not like it in my head, it makes me wish that I were…well not dead, but able to shake it for sure…

    Next up we have a lovely young man by the name of Taylor Henderson. He came second in Australian X-Factor last year, a show that I don’t even watch unless I’m reading in bed or am too tired to think. Somehow I had this little song stuck in my head for 6 months. Lucky me.

    It’s important to remember that almost always with earworm songs I have a key line wrong, usually the chorus, so that not only am I annoyed by the song the whole family gets to be annoyed as I sing in the car, kitchen or wherever it pops up.

    So today’s question is – what song is your current earworm? I need a new one – and DO NOT say Frozen, okay?

    Writing, friendship and blogging – or the need to show up

    I have been an appalling blogger of late.

    For a while there I think I was doing okay in the consistency stakes, but not lately. The thing about blogging is although not many people actually comment I do get quite a lot of readers so I apologise if anyone has been desperate to hear about my writer’s angst and I’ve let them down.

    I’m a big believer in consistency. It works for writing. It’s so much easier to write every day than to put a project aside and try and find your way back into a story. Ask anyone who does it, it’s excruciating, in a way you feel like you have to get to know the characters all over again. Connection to character is built from contact.

    It’s true as well for blogging and it is also true for life. Connection to readers is built through contact and keeping the conversation going even when it feels one sided. It’s about showing up.

    I feel the same way about friendship. Ninety percent is showing up.

    One of the wonderful things about friends in books is they always seem to have time for each other. The main character is heart-broken and she calls her best friend who drops everything to talk to her and maybe run to her side or take her out for ice-cream or alcohol.

    Friendship in life isn’t exactly like that in the 21st century. You have a bad day, you text your friend with a neutral “how are you?” ( a friend who in my case probably has 3 kids, a huge job, a dog, a sick mother-in-law, a looming deadline and PMS – that describes quite a lot of my friends) and she texts you back 3 days later. She tells you how she is and why she couldn’t text you back (read above)and asks how you are. Hopefully it was a hello text you sent and not an I found my husband cheating/I lost my job/I’m having a nervous break-down text you sent, because there was no ice-cream.

    One of the problems with that when it happens over long periods of time, is we lose connection because we don’t have time to discuss the small stuff with the important people in our lives and instead we spend hours making small talk with people we barely know.

    This is how we lose people from our lives. This is how they drift away from us. It’s the same when writing characters. You forget their favourite colour, their birthday, you don’t know what their favourite song is anymore and you have to fight your way back.

    I’m actually pretty good at showing up for my writing and in life. As the world changes I’m starting to feel like the odd man out in real life, but I guess I’ll just have to put that energy into my fictional friends for a while.

    This post wandered off track. I’ll try and be a more consistent blogger because even if I am sitting here alone having an ice-cream, or in my case a glass of wine, it still is important to show up, at least to me.

    I’ve been a pretty bad blogger the past couple of weeks but admittedly I have been on vacation. See those pictures up above, they prove it. We went on a family road trip from sunny Sydney to the Gold Coast in Queensland. It is the middle of winter so although you see and sand it wasn’t as toasty warm as these photos imply. Whoever said the camera never lies well that guy was a liar.

    Anyway it’s always nice to recharge the batteries, drink a few cocktails, ride some rollercoasters and get ready for the months ahead.

    As a parent I’m amazed at how fast time is passing and am all too aware that my delightful 13 year old will be off on her own adventures soon and I will no longer be part of her vacations so I really do try and seize the moments now because they are all too fleeting.(Having said that I’m kind of theme parked out for now!)

    So back to the desk. My new novella which will be out in August will be making it’s way to the editor this week. That’s exciting for me. I’m working on it’s sequel. The novella is the first in a series and I hope that readers like the characters. I like them. Smart women making their way in the big city while keeping their sense of humour…the kind of women I like to hang out with both in real life and in a book.(Sneak peek of the cover coming soon – sign up to my newsletter if you want to see it.)

    Musical Monday and other news…

    Allegra Holding Books IllustrationIt’s Monday again. How did that happen? Where oh where did the week go? It’s nearly the end of June already…seriously where is this year racing off too and why is it in such a hurry to get there?

    News first…I REALLY am getting my newsletter happening this time. Mail Chimp and I seem to have formed a truce and I think I can actually manage to not just write the newsletter but send it out. Amazing!

    If you haven’t signed up you really should – there’s a little box on the right of this screen – I promise not to bombard you with useless information but I do have some exciting news to share in the next couple of months and this will be the best way to get it.

    Can you believe it is a year since I did my wonderful research trip to LA to get my mind sorted for the sequel to Mr Right and Other Mongrels? No. Me either. I haven’t written that book yet but I have the story sort worked out in my mind and I would like to get it out by Christmas or maybe early 2015. Stay tuned for that one.

    Musical Monday and a round up of what’s doing in my writing life

    Summer Splash Blog HopI seriously can’t believe it is Monday again. I also can’t believe that I am participating in a thing called a Summer Splash Blog Hop (which I totally am, this coming weekend) because it’s cold here in Sydney now and really not at all summery. My brain is having serious difficulty processing.

    In other news I’m hoping my novella will be off to the editor in early July and then will be out as soon as possible after that. I’ve been messing around about doing a Box set of my first 3 books and I’m almost ready with that as well. I have the cover (I’ll show you next week).

    Oh yeah and I’m trying to master Scrivener which is a really cool software program for writers but apparently I am not really cool because I’m doing some basic stuff very wrong. (eg Why can’t I create a new Chapter that appears where I want it? Why? Why?)

    Anyway it’s musical Monday and so that calls for a song. My daughter has been practicing her clarinet today but I’ll spare you a concert.

    Instead because I seem to be eternally attached to my computer I’ll give you the song Electric Dreams, the theme song to the movie of the same name about a computer that is obsessed with it’s owner in a romantic way. Ah the 80’s.

    And I’m actually giving you two versions – movie soundtrack and a recent live version because I would have lost money and bet that no way would The Human League be able to fill a stadium with people happy to shout along to this! I thought I was the only tragic out there…just goes to show.

    Writers on Wednesday – finding a writing space (or how writers really write)

    People are often fascinated by writing space. Where does a writer work? How do they work? How is their sacred space laid out?

    I’m sure it would be nice to have such a space but above is a small slide-show of a few of the places I’ve written over the past few weeks. They vary from my dining room table (my regular haunt), to the local library to the beach.

    The truth is most writers are just trying to carve out a niche in their family home and da to day life to write. Finding the time to write is a huge issue and finding the space is another.

    I know lots of writers with young families who write on laptops in front of the TV pretending to be enamoured by Ben Ten or Pepper Pig or Superman. Some of them have a space but no one will leave them alone long enough for them to use it.

    I know people who write wildly o the train as they commute from the outer suburbs to the city. They find a space between the thrumming music of their fellow traveller’s headphones, the newspapers and the school students to scribble in their notebook or tap out a few words on their laptop.

    I know others who spend their lunchtimes in cafes, libraries and parks trying to keep the story moving forward daily with only forty minutes to spare.

    There are writers who share a desk with a teenager and others who have an armchair and a coffee table.

    Of course there are many writers with a desk and an office just for them. A constant and regular place to develop good habits (or tear their hair out) and most of them are extremely grateful to have it.

    I myself am usually perched on the end of the dining room table which is a total pain when we have visitors and we do that pretty regularly. I load everything in an archive box or my backpack and tuck it away. At the moment we’re doing some renovating so my space is dusty and noisy. It’s hard to write to the dulcet sounds of an angle grinder.

    You will often here people say “I have no time to write” and “I have no space to write” but just like exercise or watching Game of Thrones or following a football team, if it matters to you then you find a way. You sacrifice one thing for another. In the case of writing space often what gets sacrificed is good posture and ergonomics, in the case of time it’s one of these other pursuits.

    So for the next few weeks as the dust flies and the contents of my kitchen remain scattered around my home I guess I’ll have to be creative about my writing space.

    I’ve write where I can keep an eye on things: the dinner, kids, delivery guy and on some kind of installation being carried out. But because of that I don’t think my writing is being taken seriously by my family. To them it’s ‘just a hobby’. Grrr

    I long for an office that I can call my own, so I’m waiting for my 20 year old son to move out and then I’ll claim his room!

    I’m sure I get a bit of the same treatment honestly Louise. In theory I have a desk in the office but I can’t write when my husband is in there and it’s not really a big enough space for two…in a perfect world we would add an extra room but in the meantime one must make do.

    This is a picture of me writing in one of my favourite places, the Winston Churchill Memorial Park in St Brelades Bay where I live in Jersey. The park has several tiers with a magnificent waterfall, fountain, flower borders, and incredible views through the huge pine trees across St Brelades Bay.

    If you don’t wish to sit on one of the benches, there’s the lawn, overgrown patches of wild grasses, old tree stumps where trees have come down, leaving comfortable seats. Despite it being a favourite place for people to walk, or sunbathe, there’s always a quiet spot with an incredible view where I can sit and lose myself in my work in progress, or gaze out across the beach if I need inspiration. A pretty beach with cafes and restaurants is just below the park, and occasionally I’ll arrange to meet friends for coffee after a few hours writing, or go there to enjoy an ice cream, lunch, or simply for a quick dip in the sea – this usually means going no deeper than my knees, because the sea is usually far too cold for me to actually swim in it.

    I’m lucky that I live in such a beautiful island, it’s a never ending source of inspiration for my romances and there are so many gorgeous places to set scenes. Jersey might be small – only 9 x 5 miles in size – but there are many hidden coves, beautiful cliff paths for walks and endless reminders of the history that has played out here over the centuries – perfect inspiration for writing. I suppose my writing space is where ever I choose on a particular day.
