    Q&A with author Karly Lane/Karlene Blakemore-Mowle

    6/19/2012

    Morgan's Law - Karly Lane - Cover
I asked Karly/Karlene why she writes under two different names to start with…
I write under two names simply because I write two distinctively different genres. Karlene Blakemore-Mowle is what I write my romantic suspense titles under and these are published with U.S publishers. Karly Lane is my rural fiction name (also my maiden name) and this is what I
write my Australian published rural stuff with.

    1. What was the inspiration for your current novel?
Morgan’s Law came about while traveling on a family holiday through inland NSW and QLD. I love driving through new places, seeing new scenery and the thought just popped into my head- ‘wouldn’t it be strange if someone close to you wanted to be returned to a town no one in your family had ever heard of and no one knew why?’ It snowballed from there.

    2. When did you take up writing?
About 12 years ago I wrote my first novel but writing was put on hold while I had more children and work and studying took predecease over
everything but I took it up again 7 years ago while pregnant with my fourth child and joining RWA. Within a year my books were being published.

    3. How important is setting/place in your writing?
With my rural fiction setting is very important as they take
place in rural Australia. But my romantic suspense titles I find I can set
almost anywhere, and have in fact done so. They take place in Far North Qld, Cambodia, remote islands in the Pacific, South America and
    Hawaii.

    4. Do you have a favourite character (s) in your current novel?
I adore my characters in my very first book I wrote which was Operation Summer Storm and to this day they feel part of my family! However my more recent books, I think Kate from North Star is probably one of my favourites- maybe because we share so many of the same background issues and she became such a down to earth amazing character so many readers have told me they can relate to.

    5. What’s the best piece of writing advice you were ever given?
    Just do it!

    6. Do you have a schedule for writing?
I tend to write whenever I get the chance- it fits in around my family and daily jobs.

    7. Are you a plotter or someone who tends to wing it?
I wing it. I’m not good with structure. Although there is a point when I need to stop and do a bit of mini-plotting to work out some parts. Usually when I get about 2/3rds of the way through the book, I find.

    8. Can you name three of four of your current favourite books?
Well first up I’d have to say Mr Right and Other Mongrels is up the top of the list- what a great read! Congrats Monique. Loved the 50shades trilogy and have found some other great indie authors who are about to be the next big thing, go check out Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire, Flat out Love by Jessica Park and Slammed by Colleen Hoover.

    9. Can you tell me a little bit about what you are working on now?
I’m doing the second round of edits for my December release titled, Bridies Choice and working on my 2012-2013 release which is only at about 6000 words –so it’s very new and still wondering where the journey on this one is going to take me!’

    10. What advice would you give to a fledgling writer to assist them on their journey?
Just do it!! Look, I had no idea whatsoever how to write a book- all I knew was I loved to read and I had a story to tell. Just write it- it doesn’t matter how bad the punctuation- how lacking in structure or anything else- just write it down…from there you need to join writing groups or the RWA and learn how to fix what you’ve got written…but honestly- you have to have written something first, so you can work on it and it won’t be perfect-probably not for a long time and you’ll have
to do many re-writes but that’s how you get better and how you learn- there’s no simple formula- it’s just bloody hard
work! So just do it!!! Today!!!
