My writing day…or how to be a frustrated author…or pulling teeth author-style!

    10/22/2012

Pulling TeethYesterday Amazon told me Hearts Afire – the e-version would be ready by today but, that hasn’t happened. Very frustrating. Their system reviews it and that takes a certain number of hours. Everything else I have done with them has taken fewer hours than they said it would, but for reason Heart’s Afire is sent to taste my patience because it’s been slow, slow, slow.

I was also hoping to have paperback copies ready in 2 weeks to take to the local Night Markets where I am having a stall but there seems to be no way that’s going to happen either. A series of delays on this journey – a week held up here, a few days there, another couple at the next hurdle – seem to be conspiring to make that impossible.

Essentially getting this book out has been the literary equivalent of pulling teeth…slow, painful, mess.

I’m pretty goal-focussed actually. I work well with deadlines. Sure, I might ignore them for weeks on end and run full-tilt towards them arms waving until I fall exhausted on top of the deadline but I get there. This book will have taken me two full months longer than planned. It was originally supposed to be ready August 24 and it’s Oct 23rd here today…I view this sort of inability to meet a deadline as a big failure….so I’m having to dust myself off and tell myself otherwise (though as you can tell I haven’t quite sold myself on the idea yet).

It also means I’m unlikely to have the next book Alpahet Dating ready in December. I am happy to report that I was re-reading parts of it today before I send it out to some generous readers and I still like the characters and the premise. ou may have to wait until January to meet the lovely Serena and her friends but I think you’ll enjoy them when you meet them.

Being a writer has many frustrations. There are so many set-backs and delays and things you have to factor in and can’t control, and I believe that’s true whether you’re being published by a large publisher or you’re an independent like me.

What one needs to try and remember is that it’s really all about the characters. I really like my characters and I want my readers to as well. I think of them as friends (my characters and my readers) and I want them to have a successful journey but ultimately I just enjoy writing stories about people whose company I enjoy.

A little update on me and my writing – Hearts Afire just days away!

    10/16/2012

Hearts AfireLife has been very busy lately. You may have noticed poor old Heart’s Afire isn’t out yet but it will truly be only a few more days. It’s off to the formatter so that’s big progress.

Meanwhile I’m preparing for NaNoWriMo and revising another novel.

I’m looking for some Beta Readers so if that’s something you’re interested in doing for me I would love to hear from you.

In my day job lately I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing some truly extraordinary women which has been utterly inspiring. It’s funny how you speak to people who seem to find an extra few hours in the day and it motivates you to do the same.

Some people just ‘get on with it’ rather then moaning and making excuses and it’s always lovely to be surrounded by people like that.

So, I’m off to go and get on with it myself.

A general catch-up on my writing, books etc

    9/28/2012

Hearts AfireI wanted to run a YouTube clip today about the weekend and weirdly I couldn’t find any songs with weekend in the title I really liked. I did find Loverboy’s “Everybody’s Working for the Weekend” but the clip was so unattractive I couldn’t bring myself to put it on this page.

If anyone can suggest an upbeat song about weekends then I’d like to know what it is…I’m all about the upbeat!

So this weekend Hearts Afire is having a final edit. It already went to one editor last week – the lovely Jacqui – and now it’s in Deb’s safe hands. So while it is a week or so behind schedule it will hopefully be as clean as I can get it. The paperback will probably be a week or so later but certainly out by the end of the month. (Local people I will be there with both my books at the Beacon Hill Night Markets 8th November!)

I’m a bit of a stickler for a deadline but it’s better to have the book right and a few days later than out and have people unhappy.

Then my plan was to hopefully have a third book out in December but perhaps it will be January. It will depend a bit on real life and how it impacts. This last month simply evaporated and that was September…who knows how crazy November might get? I think perhaps the e-book will get up but not the paperback…

    Mr Right and Other Mongrels
If you haven’t read Mr Right and Other Mongrels yet than this is the weekend to do it because it’s only 99c on Amazon.

Hearts Afire – excerpt Chapter 1.

    9/20/2012
Hearts AfireI’ve been away this week and my little blog has been a bit neglected. I thought with the release of Hearts Afire about a week away I would post the opening here for something different. I hope you like it.

    ***
    Hearts Afire
    Chapter 1, Opening

“See” said Lisa, “This is why people don’t cater their own weddings! It’s just too stressful.”

Cassie looked at her sister and shook her head. They were standing in the kitchen of her business, Callahan Catering, surveying the mountains of food that she had prepared in time for today’s wedding reception, her own wedding reception.

There were blinis with smoked salmon and plates of plump oysters. There were slabs of roast beef and jugs of au jus to pour over them, platters of rocket, pumpkin and feta salad and her
signature cous cous dish. There was even a magnificent 4-tier cake covered with fresh magnolias. Now all of it was for
    nothing.

“Lisa, getting the food ready was not the stressful part! Having the groom call and cancel the wedding just hours
before hand is the stressful part!”

Today Cassie Callahan had been supposed to marry her long-time boyfriend Angus. Cassie could not believe that
Angus had waited till just two hours before the wedding to decide he needed to go trekking in Nepaland find
    himself.

“How can I commit to you Cassie, when I don’t even know who I am?”

Puh-lease. Why now? Why not yesterday? Why not last week? Why not last month?

So now Cassie was left, standing in the kitchen in the white dress Angus had chosen, a frilly strapless
meringue-like arrangement that she wasn’t even sure she liked, surveying the wedding banquet that wasn’t to
    be.

“Well,” she sighed. “When Gavin gets here with the refrigerated truck we’ll just have him take it to a women’s
shelter instead of the Botanical Gardens. It can’t all go to waste!”

Cassie Callahan was nothing if not a pragmatist. She hadn’t cried or begged when Angus had called. Certainly, she’d
been dismayed, but if the man didn’t want to marry her, then there wasn’t much she could do about it. Cassie had learnt long ago you couldn’t really change people, or bend them to your will.

    “What’s that smell?” Lisa asked.

    “What smell?”

    “Like something burning….oh no!”

All of a sudden the fire alarm sounded and the automatic sprinkler system came on soaking Cassie, Lisa and the
platters of food. Could the day get any worse?

    ***
Hearts Afire will be out late September/early October.

Meanwhile Mr Right and Other Mongrels is available at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0086L8NBS.

Interview with Lisa Kelly – my lovely book cover designer

    9/10/2012
    Hearts Afire
Lisa and I don’t live in the same city or even the same hemisphere. When I said I was looking to find a designer Lisa was recommended to me and so we have done our design collaboration long-distance via email, Skype and Pinterest.

I had a notion that I wanted my books to have illustrated rather than photographic covers and that I wanted them to be identifiable as by the same author, or branded, if you will. I also wanted them to look good in a small black and white thumbnail on a Kindle. So we started from there.

I asked Lisa some questions about book designing and what to ask designers if you’re looking for one.

    1. From the designer p.o.v what makes an ideal client?
Honestly, the best client is one that provides constructive feedback. As a designer I know I’ll need to make edits to my work, so I want to hear what parts of a concept was successful and what wasn’t. I recently did some freelance for a friend of mine who felt uncomfortable talking to me about what he didn’t like because he was afraid of hurting my feelings. I told him I ultimately wanted him to be happy with my work and I can not do that without knowing what to fix.

    2. To do a book cover design what sorts of things do you need to know from an author?
I think our process worked really well. You provided me with the book’s synopsis and the first few chapters which gave me a good feel for the story and characters. We were able to pull some themes and discuss their illustrations. Pinterest was also very helpful, where I was able to see what covers you liked.

    3. Do you have any book covers that you especially love (apart from your own?)
I love book covers! It’s hard to narrow it down but two stand out in my mind – the movie cover version on Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safranfoer and True by Riika Pulkkinen. Safranfoer’s cover has an image with the text written on the boy’s fingers, which I find striking. True has textured layers of color with a simple sans serif text. In the “chic-lit” genre, I enjoy Mary Kay Andrews’ colorful illustrated covers and the clean, flirty look of Kathleen Tessaro’s books. I also admire vintage book covers. I have a few interesting 1960s paperbacks from my parents that can be used as design inspiration.

    4. What sorts of questions do you think an author should ask a book cover designer?
I would ask for work samples of any designer. You want to see what the designer’s aesthetic is and if you like their style. Also, a book cover designer needs to be very good with details. Any errors in the layout could
affect the book cover’s look, particularly the printed book cover.

    5. Obviously ours is a long-distance relationship…what do you think the challenges are with that?
I think the biggest challenge was the beginning of the Mongrels cover. If we were in the same city (or continent!) I would show you pencil sketches and we would collaborate in person. While I could have scanned sketches and Skyped
you, I did not feel that would have worked as effectively as a sit-down together. However, a positive from the long distance was our reliance on email. Our electronic discussions regarding the design tended to be pretty detailed
and a good reference for me. There were no communication errors about design as a result.

    6. How long does it take to come up with ideas for a cover..how many do you burn before you come up with a few you like to show a client?
Part of my answer relates to the last question. I spent some time on “electronic sketches” to initially show you for the Mongrels cover and I ended up going another direction for the second round. For Hearts Afire there was less burned ideas since I narrowed down key themes and we discussed them before going forward. But like many jobs, the time spent on a creative project is relative, one tends to think “off the clock.” I work ideas out in my head while I’m doing other things – driving, running, cooking, etc.

    8. How is designing a book cover different from other design work or is it not?
It is a bit different. In much of my other design work, I have a general concept of what needs to be designed or certain logos or images that need to be incorporated into the project. We started from scratch together with Mr. Right and Other Mongrels, coming up with the illustration as well as the type design. Once we set the tone of the first book, the second went a little faster because we had the fonts identified and a certain look we were trying to achieve to match the original illustration.

    9. How can people get in touch with you (eg website, Pinterest, twitter etc).
Right now the best way is through email lisarkelly(at)gmail(dot)com. I’m on Pinterest via this link http://pinterest.com/lisa_r_kelly/. My business goal for 2012 is to get a portfolio website up and running – I still have a few months to get it done! Fortunately I have been able to acquire freelance jobs via word of mouth so my website keeps getting put on the back burner while I juggle my family and work.

August is such a busy month…

    8/5/2012

    Calendar
Do you have certain months of the year that you know will just be plain old busy, busy, busy?

We all know December is manic but for me the other really busy month of the year is August. July ends and August lands with a great big thud. It should probably arrive with a loud-speaker announcement to ‘get moving’.

It’s a birthday month here…my daughter, myself and heck, even the dog celebrate birthdays. (It’s not as bad as when my daughter was little and we were in a mothers’ group with seven or eight kids all with birthdays within days of each other. That was a lot of parties…although I must say I do miss those days. I guess that’s a different post on nostalgia).

Plus it seems to be a month where there are kid-related extras I didn’t forsee – a band concert, a dance performance, school athletics carnival, school fundraiser (which I am happy to say I’m not working at or running for the first time in 7 years!!!), inter-school debates and the list goes on. (Not to reference the un-written nostalgia post again but time is moving so fast it’s a shame to miss these events which will be a dim memory soon.)

I also try to go away to the Romance Writers of Australia conference so that’s another spanner in the works. There’s the logistics of being away (my lovely husband does not have a simple 9-5 job with any rhythm to it so I’m always juggling child-minding as I race to the airport) as well as plan the what to pack, what to wear and of course the pitch preparation.

This year as well I’m working on finalising that paperback version of Mr Right and Other Mongrels and the final edits of Hearts Afire. That flu last week just sucked my brain dry and depleted my creative energy….I had planned to release Hearts Afire in August but I’m now pushing it back to September. I’d rather wait and have it right than race it out and have it below par. When you put your name on the front of something you have to be happy with it.

I am a freak for a deadline…even if it’s just one I created myself but sometimes you have to see reason.

Now I had better go do my day-job so I’m not behind in that as well.

Please stop by and take a look.

Not much else to tell you today. Busy doing my day job. Final edits on Hearts Afire and working on getting Mr Right and Other Mongrels ready to go out in other formats including as a paperback.

I did read a book last night. I read Wicked Business by Janet Evanovich. I didn’t love it. It’s the second in a series and I recall not loving the first either but what I love is the location.

The book is set in Salem, Marblehead, Lynn and Boston. I was an exchange student in that area in the 1980’s and have visited a few times since. It’s always fun to read about places you know.

Hearts Afire – the next book

    7/11/2012

At the moment I am working on the edit of my next book Heart’s Afire. I’m busy doing this as I plan to release it late in August and that’s really only six weeks away give or take. (Am I the only one who feels like this year is flying by at an alarming rate?)

Hearts Afire is a bit different to Mr Right and Other Mongrels in that it is more of a traditional contemporary romance written from the points of view of both the main characters, not in first person. I think what the two books have in common is that both are romantic comedies and both have very likeable hard-working heroines who are prepared to go it alone if they have to, but maybe just maybe would be open to some romance if the right guy came along.

I think if you enjoyed one book you will certainly enjoy the other.

Hearts Afire brings together a jilted bride, a fireman, a tropical island and jealous ex.

The fun part for me, given it’s the middle of a cold winter here in Sydney, is spending time on the Great Barrier Reef (if only in my imagination) surrounded by azure seas, white sand and cocktails.

I’ll be sharing more information about Hearts Afire in the coming weeks including the cover, excerpts and some fun competitions. In the meantime…
    Great Barrier Reef
